Vice President, Tax

Job Description

BioMed is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Vice President of Tax, to join the team in San Diego, California or Cambridge, Massachusetts. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, and working closely with the senior accounting personnel and the executive management team, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing analytical and decision support and working alongside the Finance teams to develop and manage tax strategy and tactics for the company including identification, research and resolution of tax issues. They will also foster a collaborative environment by working with cross-functional teams and interacting with key stakeholders at BioMed and Blackstone, on understanding tax complexities and implications at various stages of the cycle and in identifying levers to create value. Additionally, the successful candidate will serve as part of the Finance Leadership Team, alongside other department leads such as FP&A, Asset Management, Accounting, IT, Risk Management, and Capital Markets, allowing for this individual to have broad scope within their own role and accessibility within the organization. As a leader within the firm, the successful candidate will oversee direct reports, and will manage external tax consulting service providers. This is a high visibility role, with consistent and impactful interaction with the top executives at BioMed and senior team members at Blackstone.

The role is located in San Diego or Cambridge and is a full time in office position.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of the company's global tax function, including strategy, compliance and returns, audits, transfer pricing policies, tax reporting, and other ad-hoc tax requirements
  • Interface with senior management and sponsor
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance team by attracting, developing, engaging and retaining team members with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Identify, research, provide recommendations to and implement resolutions to any tax matters, informed by business strategy
  • Responsible for global tax compliance, including managing external tax preparers and reviewing all tax work-papers used to complete all state, federal, and international tax returns, review estimated tax payments and respond to tax notices
  • Oversee the Company's TRS entities
  • Maintain corporate tax provision in accordance with ASC 740 for the taxable REIT subsidiaries and foreign tax paying entities
  • Collaborate with internal and external legal counsel, treasury accounting, and other business partners on complex tax transactions and issues. Supervise and manage external consultants
  • Calculate the REIT's earnings and profits for purposes of determining the tax treatment of our dividend
  • Review quarterly taxable income and E&P forecasts
  • Provide tax advice and assistance for new leases, service contracts, investments, derivative transactions, and/or acquisitions/dispositions
  • Review quarterly REIT Income and Asset tests
  • Performs other duties as assigned, some of which may be essential to the job
Job Specifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in tax or accounting and advanced degree in Taxation or CPA
  • 12+ years of relevant work experience, including a mix of public accounting experience
  • Experience at a Big Four accounting firm, as well as private industry REIT experience running a tax department
  • Extensive REIT-related tax experience and knowledge, specifically focusing on REIT tax strategy and planning and in preparation of REIT income and asset tests
  • Intricate tax modeling skills and the ability to create or redesign tax models
  • Demonstrated ability to identify potential tax issues and exposures, establish an effective mitigation plan and influence senior management regarding risks and exposures
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and communicate the status of ongoing projects to senior management and sponsor
  • Extensive experience with REIT specific topics including: Form 1120-REITs, Form 1065s, Form 1120s, and the various foreign and state filings, taxable REIT subsidiaries and transfer pricing analyses
  • Familiarity with tax accounting financial reporting in accordance with ASC 740
  • Experienced in tax technology toolsets and Microsoft Excel, Word, and FAS
  • Open to new technology
  • Strong track record of professionalism and excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with hedging transaction and UK tax law preferred, but not required
Other:
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 15lbs
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly using the telephone and other collaboration tools/technologies
  • Some travel may be required

Salary Range: $220,000-$250,000 per year + bonus + long term incentive + benefits
